SAMWU sets the tone for giving back to communities and SAMWU Financial Services begins rollout

On the 9th of November 2017, The President of SAMWU Pule Molalenyane held a media briefing in Bloemfontein. The briefing was aimed at highlighting SAMWU’s commitment to giving back to the community in which we work. We chose to celebrate and empower three initiatives that we feel are important to bringing change into the lives of our members and the communities in which they come from.
SAMWU chose to celebrate the empowerment of a young lady named Olga Nkoanyane. SAMWU had donated a state of the art electric wheelchair to her, which has helped her gain independence as she sells airtime vouchers at her local taxi rank for a living. Through the exposure she got from a local radio station and the union, she went on to be a recipient of a 'bravery' award at an awards ceremony held in Johannesburg.

The second initiative SAMWU committed to was providing sponsorship to Moteo FM a local community radio station, the union felt that this would be an exhibition of leadership in the hopes that it would encourage other organisations to follow suit in uplifting local media. This resonated with SAMWU as we feel that media platforms of any kind are the life blood of any democracy and so it is important to ensure that they have the necessary resources which they need in order to operate freely. The President of the union stated “ the sponsorship of these resources is by no means aimed at getting favourable coverage, nor is it to inspire bias content. It is to ensure that these small stations get the support they need to enable them to spread the good work that they do”.

Moreover, the third Initiative was the signing of the first ever SAMWU Financial Services policy. The President led by example in signing his policy, a demonstration that one cannot offer members a service which you wouldn’t use yourself.
The signing of this policy precedes a planned national rollout which will see the TBFS team as well as the Committee from SAMWU side doing provincial visits in order to help members sign up, as well as explain the intricacies of the different policies. SAMWU continues to blaze the trail in exemplifying what can happen when a Union puts its members first, not only that but making a concerted effort to uplift the communities that they come from. SAMWU Financial Services is one of the many ways that SAMWU in association with TBFS aims to ensure that every worker’s money works for them.
