The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) held a successful march on the 31st May at the Maluti-A-Phofung municipality in the Free State Province. The purpose of the march was to deliver a memorandum of demands to the municipality following demands of workers which are yet to be addressed.

Workers in the municipality demanded the following;

1. That the municipality be out under Sec 139(c) for failure to manage its finances, failure to pay salaries, pensions, medical aids and other benefits for the past 6 months.

2. Outstanding May month salaries should be paid immediately.

3. Duplicate appointments on same positions should be reverse.

4. Map Water (the entity), should be allowed representation in LLF and all Collective Agreements reached at Bargaining Council should be extended to Map Water.

5. EPWP, Contract Workers, Mayoral Project Workers and Auditors should be absorbed permanently by the municipality.

6. Equal pay for equal work.

7. All Settlements and Awards won at Bargaining Council should be complied with.

8. All political interference in the administration should be stopped immediately.

Workers are eagerly waiting for the municipality to respond to these demands, failure to which, workers will be left with no other alternative but to withdraw their labour so the employer can take them serious.
