SAMWU Welcomes Mafube Administration

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) notes and welcomes the decision by the Free State Province’s Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) to place the Mafube Local Municipality under administration. For the past few years, we have been ventilating our frustrations about this very same municipality wherein we were convinced that the municipality had technically run aground due to the lack of political and administrative leadership.
The Mafube Municipality along with other municipalities continually pay workers late while third parties which includes funeral policies, UIF, medical aid, union subscriptions and pension funds are never paid.

We are therefore pleased by the COGTA decision as we believe that this is a step in the right direction to ensure that the municipality is stabilized in the interest of service delivery for the residents and workers.

In welcoming this decision, we urge COGTA to urgently intervene at the Maluti-A-Pofhung and Masilonyana Local Municipalities which have also joined this bandwagon of subjecting workers to poverty and compromising service delivery while prioritizing Councillors and private companies which have resulted in municipalities being in the situations they find themselves in.
