SAMWU Welcomes Bargaining Council Ruling on CoJ Recognition

23 February 2017

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) in the Johannesburg Greater Region notes and welcomes the ruling regarding the representation and status of the union at the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Despite the Labour Court Judgement that was delivered by Judge Snyman on the 14th December, the City of Johannesburg continued with their crusade of delegitimizing the union by not recognizing the it in the City.
We are however please that on the 22 February, the South African Local Government Bargaining Council (SALGBC) has issued an award in favor of the union which give the union the recognition status, this coupled with the Labour Court judgement.

We trust that following this ruling the City will cease with its divide and conquer strategy which it had since adopted against SAMWU by having talks with people whom they are aware were in no way representing the union.

SAMWU in the Johannesburg Region is led by Khayalethu Nyathi as the Chairperson, Rachel Matsepe, Deputy Chair, Bafana Zungu Regional Secretary, Thomas Lebea Deputy Regional Chair and Stanley Moloko as the Treasurer.

We therefore urge our members and the media to treat any Johannesburg communication which is not signed by Zungu and Lebea as illegitimate.
