SAMWU Mpumalanga Post PEC Statement

  • Tuesday, 18 October 2016 12:35
12 October 2016

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) in Mpumalanga province held a successful provincial Executive Committee (PEC) on the 12th and 13th of October 2016 at Orion Promenade Hotel.

We noted with regret the intention by the DA to collapse SALGA by withdrawing its membership from the association. The union view this as an direct attack to the collective bargain hence Mpumalanga executive committee call on its membership in Mpumalanga to do everything in their powers to defend the collective agreement both at divisional level and national level.

The PEC demands that all Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers be permanent employed in the different municipalities precisely because it is the union’s view the job that the workers are doing need a warm body to perform on daily basis throughout the year workers are doing. The union in Mpumalanga therefore call on all municipalities to budget and absorb all EPWP on permanent basis.

We are disturbed by the intention by SAMWUMED to change its name and erode the participation of SAMWU structures in the operations of the medical aid. Mpumalanga wants to distance its self from such an action and further condemn the latter in the strongest term possible. Mpumalanga further wants to appreciate and support the efforts by the NOBs to stop the medical aid from the senseless behaviour. The PEC therefore resolved that the union’s national leadership must use everything at their disposal to defend the medical aid from being stolen from its original members.

The PEC is particularly perturbed by the SAMWU Provided Fund resolution to also change the name of the fund as endeavour by individuals to take total control of the scheme for their narrow personal benefit. We call on all members who contribute in the fund to petition the name change and ensure that the fund remains in the hands of its original owners.

We have noted and are sadden by the level of union bashing that is taking place in some local municipalities particular in Doctor JS Moroka. The PEC therefore calls on the ANC in the province to intervene or the union will have no option but to unleash the power of its members as an endeavour to defend its self from intransigent Municipal managers.

The PEC also noted and congratulated SALGA for holding its elective conference on the 6-7th of October 2016. SAWMU further wants to wish the newly elected SALGA leadership well in discharging their mandate. The union hold the view that the newly elected leadership is duty bond to work tirelessly in ensuring that the employer, employee relations in the province drastically improve.

The PEC reinforced its provincial leadership collective. The Provincial Office Bearers are therefore as follows;

Chairperson : Lucky Nkosi

Deputy chairperson: Brain Manayaka

Secretary: Saul Simelane

Deputy Secretary: Sam Lekhuleni

Treasurer : Portia Nkuna

Issued by SAMWU Mpumalanga Province
