SAMWU dismisses fraudulent propaganda by SALGA

SAMWU dismisses fraudulent propaganda by SALGA

SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT.
13th April 2010.

SAMWU would like to dismiss the fraudulent propaganda by SALGA that was directed at the union. SAMWU’s National Strike action attracted 10’s of thousands of members countrywide. The union is generally happy with the participation of its members in the strike action; 80% of our members have heeded the call for strike action. SAWMU members are frustrated with SALGA’s delays and evasions that have been going on for the past 7 years.

Workers have wanted to go on strike on the demands we put forward to Local Government for a very long time. SAMWU has been through all the processes of bargaining and we have exhausted our options. SAMWU members nationally want their reasonable and legitimate demands to be resolved as soon as possible.

SALGA withdraws court challenge to strike

SALGA withdraws court challenge to strike

SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT.
13th April 2010.

This morning in the Johannesburg Labour Court SALGA was forced to withdraw its court application to declare the municipal strike unlawful. The advice of the Labour Court judge was that SALGA’s case was completely without merit and risked being dismissed with contempt. SALGA is now forced to pay for SAMWU’s entire legal costs.

SAMWU’s Collective Bargaining Officer, Dale Forbes, commented that “this is typically what we have come to expect from SALGA: irresponsible abuse of taxpayers’ money without any attempt to deal with the real issues. We call on SALGA now that its legal campaign has been proven to be hopelessly flawed and SAMWU’s contention, that it had followed all due processes has been vindicated to seriously apply itself to the issues at hand. We must have pay parity at municipal level. We must have an effective job evaluation system in place. We must have appropriate salaries for all local government workers and lawyers and retired judges must remove themselves from internal disciplinary matters.”

The SAMWU urgent national press conference will take place today at 2:30pm and not at 1pm. SALGA is trying to derail the proposed National Strike action by SAMWU’s 130 000 members on Monday.

The court proceedings started this morning and have been delayed by SALGA. SAMWU will be giving a full report back on the court proceedings and all other issues relating to the national strike action at the press conference this afternoon at 2:30pm
