PSI congratulates SAMWU on its victory Dear Comrade Steve Faulkner, SAMWU’s International Officer
I write to congratulate the leadership and the entire membership of SAMWU for your resilience in standing against the injustices in your country against Municipal Workers. I read with joy this morning about your victory and I would like to use this opportunity to assure you of the support of the PSI in any legitimate workers struggle as you have just gone through. It is my hope that whatever agreement that has been reached will be implemented fully. |

SAMWU is disturbed by IMATU’s opportunistic behaviour! SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT. 22nd April 2010.
SAMWU is seriously disturbed by the contents of the media statement issued by Independent Municipal & Allied Trade Union (IMATU), wherein they claim credit to the resolution of the issues which took thousands of municipal workers to the streets in the last one and a half weeks on strike, all while IMATU was basking on the hopes of a third person to adjudicate on. It is common public knowledge that thousands of municipal workers who are members of SAMWU made SALGA move on the demands which were close to their heart.
Whoever is the provider of such misleading information within IMATU; we categorically reject any opportunist tendency by IMATU to claim any credit from the strike and should desist from misleading its membership and the public with inaccurate information. This shows utter contempt for the more than 70 000 municipal workers who remained resolute and determined over the 7 day period of National Strike action by SAMWU. Our members forced SALGA to the negotiating table and continued to apply pressure, until the employer body conceded to SAMWU’s demands. |

SAMWU VICTORIOUS IN WAGE CURVE AND DISCIPLINARY STRIKE SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT. 22nd April 2010. Municipal workers on the streets achieved what 6 years negotiations failed to achieve. We now have an agreement on wage curves starting 1 July 2010. Our long wait to introduce proper salaries for all municipal workers is now over thanks to workers’ power.
The grading system, TASK, will set salaries at the 50th percentile but using the most recent wage information. These curves will differ depending on how big your municipality is, its income and any assistance it receives from central government in the form of the Equitable Share.
