SAMWU urgent National Press conference today

SAMWU urgent National Press conference today, on actions to be taken against SALGA

SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT.
04 June 2010.

SAMWU’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting held in Johannesburg will be calling a press conference today to inform the media and the public about the actions the CEC has decided to take, against the South African local Government Association (SALGA) and one of its officials.

During the SAMWU National Strike Action held in April 2010 an agreement had been reached between the Union and the Employer, effectively ending the strike action. Prior to the signing of the agreement, a senior SALGA official had taken it upon himself to unilaterally make changes to the agreement that had been reached between parties. These changes were substantive. These changes could easily force the Union to go back on strike over this agreement if the matter is not resolved in 7 days time, which affects our member’s lives on a daily basis.

Drop the so called Charges against Comrade Vavi

Drop the so called Charges against Comrade Vavi, Take Action against Corruption in Government!

SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT
02 June 2010.

SAMWU the largest Local Government Union in its CEC meeting expressed outrage at the alleged decision by the National Working Committee of the ANC to lay disciplinary charges against the General Secretary of COSATU, Comrade Zwelinzima Vavi. The charges are allegedly in response to Comrade Zweli speaking out on behalf of COSATU about the need for Government to respond swiftly and appropriately to allegations of corruption within Government.

Comrade Vavi drew attention to the fact that there are very serious perceptions in our communities about Government being ‘soft’ on corruption, especially when it involves senior Government officials and representatives. The attack is not only about comrade Vavi and COSATU; it is an attack on COSATU affiliates and the working class, similar to the apartheid tactics used by the former regime. It is also a threat to the economic development of our people.

Malawi Gay Men Pardoned

Malawi Gay Men Pardoned, The Struggle for Equality Continues!

SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT
31 May 2010.

Reports over the weekend indicated that President Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi had granted an unconditional pardon to the two gay men who had been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for admitting that they were involved in a same sex relationship. The release of Tiwonge Chimbalanga, 20, and Steven Monjeza, 26, was as a result of international outrage from a very wide range of organisations including trade unions, faith based organisations, and human and gay rights campaigning groups. The Secretary General of the United Nations reflected these concerns in a meeting with the President and this too seems to have helped to bring about the pardon.

SAMWU congratulates SATAWU

SAMWU congratulates SATAWU on its victory and cautions the media

SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT
28th May 2010.

SAMWU would like to congratulate SATAWU, the COSATU affiliate that organises Transport, Cleaning and Security workers, on its victory. SATAWU had yesterday signed an agreement to end the strike at Transnet. Viva SATAWU Viva!

We have however been saddened by the manner in which the media spread rumours and lied about earlier offers, when reporting on the SATAWU strike. The media also only told one side of the story and constantly used the 2010 World Cup to discredit the workers struggles.
