SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT.

JOHANNESBURG 02 October 2009.

The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) is extremely troubled by the actions of the South African Police Services (SAPS) in relation to legitimate industrial and social protests. The recent events in Standerton, Mpumalanga where police opened deadly fire on service delivery protesters is a case in point.

We ourselves are all too familiar with the inadequacies of service delivery. Our members on the ground know and experience the frustration of the poor. It is entirely consistent with the ideals of a democratic society for the poor to protest and collectively raise their demands. That is why SAMWU supports those campaigning for an increase in services, and will continue to urge the  government to make good on its promises to deliver them.

Cosatu defends street trashing

By Carien du Plessis

Municipal workers have defended and justified the trashing of streets as a tactic to counter the employers' "provocation", while Cosatu leaders insisted that such violent action "has no place in our struggles".

Some delegates also came to the workers' defence, saying the littering and trashing was not violence but a labour weapon, blaming the police for provocation.

SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) deputy president Boss Nxu told the congress yesterday that the affiliate was unhappy that Cosatu seemed to be supporting "police brutality" rather than defending the union.

SAMWU is not going to accept that crooked BMW winner Tsheko Maloma take sole responsibility.
Questions still remain unanswered.

SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT.

JOHANNESBURG 17th September 2009.

SAMWU has learned with dismay about the handing over of a sleek new
BMW to Sekhukhune District Municipality in Limpopo by the Assets
Forfeiture Unit, before investigations were completed and those
responsible for negligence taken to task.

We are not going to accept that Tsheko Maloma should take sole
responsibility for the outcome of the case in question because the
Municipality was not only aware of the absurd bill but was also
notified when the 3G datacard account was hovering at around R151
411.70. Due to carelessness the Municipality chose not to investigate
the matter until it was too late and the account was sitting at R277
484.

Tsheko Maloma worked for the Greater Sekhukhune District Municipality
in Groblersdal and in November 2007, he stole a Vodacom 3G datacard
from the Municipality. He then went on to use the datacard to enter
the Vodacom 100 Cars competition, Maloma entered the competition
thousands of times and eventually won a brand new BMW 320i.
