Councillors in Mpumalanga are violating recruitment policy

SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT
28th July 2010

Mbombela Councillors are arrogantly appointing general workers during caucus meetings, violating the Recruitment and Selections Policy of the Municipality, opening up avenues for corruption.

Councillors do feature in the appointment process as politicians but they are not allowed to recruit workers during caucus meetings and violate policy. The appointment of general workers does not require the council’s participation.

A number of positions are not advertised, no interviews are conducted and people are appointed. The processes that are supposed to be followed in recruiting staff for the Municipality are being completely disregarded. This for SAMWU is very worrying, as the actions by the Councillors could very easily lead to many other grave forms of corruption.

People from as far as KwaZulu Natal are appointed as general workers, for positions which do not require special expertise.

SAMWU the largest Local Government Union has lodged a dispute over the arrogance displayed by councillors in Mbombela, unfortunately and for reasons unknown to the Union the Municipality has not responded to the dispute the Union has lodged.

SAMWU is calling for an investigation into the matter; we want those who are involved in this corrupt practice to be brought to book. The fraudulent practice of appointments must be nullified, with the view that all appointments must follow the correct procedures.

We are calling upon Journalists and News Editors from all around the country to also investigate and probe issues of corruption in Local Government. As South Africans it is our duty, to ensure that Local Government is corruption free and that the people of this country start receiving the services they ought to be receiving.

For further comment contact SAMWU’s Charlotte Jiyane (Provincial Media Co-ordinator) on 072 427 1901 or 013 986 9119.
