WATER CRISIS LOOMS FOR COUNTRY

SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT
28 June 2010.

Employer body in the water sector SAAWU (South African Association of Water Utilities), during the last round of wage negotiations showed no further movement from their previous position, intentionally driving the sector towards a dispute. This jeopardizes the nation’s water supply. This also comes at a time when the nation needs uninterrupted water supply during the World Cup.

SAAWU has made an unacceptably low offer to workers in the sector, ranging from 8% for the highest paid to 10% for the lowest paid workers. The unions have rejected this and are demanding 13.5% for the lowest paid and 11% for the highest paid. Friday’s negotiations were the last scheduled round.

The parties represented largely by SAMWU (South African Municipal Workers’ Union) and the smaller unions UASA and NEHAWU are engaged in centralised bargaining for the sector, together with the employers’ organisation SAAWU. The parties met on Friday for the fourth round of negotiations.

The Amanzi Bargaining Council covers 6000 workers in the strategically important provision of potable water for South Africa’s population.
