SAMWU urgent National Press Conference tomorrow! All members of the media are invited SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT. 4th March 2010.
The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) the largest local government Union would like to call a press conference tomorrow, the 5th of March 2010, to give a briefing on the political and local government discussions that took place today at the Unions National Executive Committee (NEC).
The purpose of this Press Conference will be to pronounce on pressing political issues including relations within the Tripartite Alliance and the Government, the continuing challenges that face the working class and the poor people at this time. The Press Conference will be addressed by the national leadership of the Union.
The political discussions that took place today, at the SAMWU NEC were robust and progressive; SAMWU NEC delegates from all 9 provinces reflected on the service delivery protests, the recent budget, recent statements of the Presidency in relation to nationalisation, and what appears to be a watering down of decisions that were made in relation to Labour Brokers, Job Creation and related matters. Some of the issues to be addressed at the urgent press conference are as follows; - Challenges facing the ANC and its leadership under comrade Jacob Zuma and recent allegations levelled against him - Health Issues including National Health Insurance (NHI) - Ongoing community struggles and service delivery protests - Corruption, and SAMWU’s campaign to name and shame. - Unemployment and Job losses in the past year - The capitalist assault on the working class - Public services and bringing it under public control The SAMWU NEC is taking place after a disappointing State of the Nation Address by President Jacob Zuma and followed by an equally uninspiring Budget Speech by Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan, which disappointed SAMWU and the labour movement in general. Members of the media are invited to the urgent press conference to be held as follows: Date : 05/03/2010 Venue : Cedar Park Hotel and Conference Centre 120 Western Service Road Woodmead Sandton Time : 11:00 am For further comment contact SAMWU National Media and Publicity Officer Tahir Sema on 0829403403 Issued by; Tahir Sema.
