SAMWU says State of the Nation address did not address a number of pressing issues.

SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT.
17th February 2010.

As SAMWU we have cautiously considered President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation Address. We understand that a speech of this type cannot cover everything; however, we are disappointed that the State of the Nation Address did not address a number of pressing issues relating to the countries well-being at present.

The acknowledgment of nearly a million job losses was not enough, without presenting an urgent alternative to the economic trajectory combined with the economic recession. We also noted the absence of a firm strategy to create jobs, which should have been addressed as a priority. We concur with our federation COSATU in expressing its concerns which covered the whole range of issues. We sincerely hope that we are not returning to the unhealthy and difficult times when workers and their alliance partners were sidelined by the Government.

We will continue to support President Zuma to realise agreed ANC Manifesto and policy targets. Despite the weaknesses of the State of the Nation Address, we hope that action on jobs; poverty alleviation and service delivery remain at the centre of Government concerns.
