SAMWU Strike action in GautengSAMWU PRESS STATEMENT. 15th February 2010.
SAMWU has overtime observed how the East Rand Water Care Company (ERWAT) management has snubbed the Union (the biggest trade union in the local government sector) and denied workers participation in the internal processes of transforming the institution. This kind of behavior has far reaching implications and allows for corrupt activities. The workers are tired of the attitude of the management of ERWAT and will be embarking on a march on the 16/02/2010.
The demands the workers are calling for are as follows: • Suspensions of managers who were involved in the sale of ERTEC ( a company providing technical services) and an investigation with immediate effect. • Establishment of the Local labour Forum (LLF). • An Employment equity plan and the reports thereof must be made public. • The Union should be allowed to participate in the key decision making structures of the institution. • Disbandment of the board and ERWAT to be integrated back into Ekurhuleni Municipality. The march will start at the R21 road and proceed to the R25/Babsfontein road to the ERWAT Head office. For further comment contact SAMWU Ekurhuleni Branch Secretary Koena Ramotlou on (011) 815 3586 or 073 254 9394. Issued by; Tahir Sema. South African Municipal Workers' Union of COSATU. National Media and Publicity officer.
