SAMWU Devastated by Traffic Officer Murder

  • Monday, 15 December 2014 14:40

  15 December 2014

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) is devastated by the barbaric murder of JMPD traffic officer in Meadowlands, Soweto on the 12 December 2014.

Marvin Hollander was shot and killed while his colleague T Mahlangu was injured while they were responding to a highjacked vehicle in Meadowlands on the 12th December. SAMWU sends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Hollander. We are saddened and devastated at the death of a law enforcement officer while on duty. We further convey wishes for a speedy recovery to Mahlangu who was injured during the shoot-out. The Hollander family now has to live with the reality of facing a black Christmas after they have been robbed of a beloved family member.

This is just one of the challenges that traffic officers encounter daily, not knowing if they will be able to return home to their families when they leave for work. When crime statistics were released this earlier this year, we expressed our shock that some crimes including car highjacking have increased.

Criminals not only do not have respect for law but human life including the lives of people who are supposed to enforce the law. We urge community members who have information that can lead to the arrests of these individuals to approach their nearest police station.
